Any one read the Bygones page of the Nottingham evening post? It finally appeared in the November 4 copy. It was a good write up except for a couple of mistakes and an ommission. IT stated that Graham Drury began with the Invaders in 1983, he didn't it was 1984, when he took over the retired Alan Molyneux's place. Dave Lowe (the Author of the piece) forgot to mension that Stoney and the Mad Dog also won the 1997 Best Pairs Championship. I will be emailing him about this. At the end of the articleDave Lowe asks "Do you remember that title winning team?"
Email david.lowe@nottinghameveningpost.co.uk
So come on you Invaders fans lets show people we ain't forgot that amazing night 25 years ago!!

Wow, its 25 years since we on the league. I reminded the Evening Post on this and vetted their article, done by a friend of mine there. I'm told it will appear on 5thb or 6th October. Importantly we continue the search for somewhere we can win the league again and maybe one day we'll strike gold.
We'd rather be in "future events" than "bygones"

Hi folks, went to watch coventry 47 v 43 wolves last night (27/08/09) which was a great match, Ben Barker 14+3 (future World Champion, heres hoping :) ), but what made the evening more interesting was bumping into a certain ex long eaton riders dad.
There i was reading my programme prior to start time when a chap tapped me on the shoulder to ask me what kind of bike that i ride (Gilera GP800 as it is), anyways we got talking and said that i was from long eaton, thats when the penny dropped and the identity was revealed, i was talking to john tyler father of.........have u guessed????......yes he is the father of david tyler who rode for us when we won the league in 1984.
David now lives in solihull, is married and still gets along to coventry to watch speedway as and when he can.
I will never forget when david took me round the track at long eaton on the bike of his bike, cheers mate :)
And David if you are reading this can i say what a pleasure it was to meet your father, and it will be good to meet up with yourself sometime, if not at coventry speedway at one of the long eaton speedway reunion evenings that are held annually in june, i have passed details onto your father.
Cheers

Jun 22 2009 05:25 am
I would just like to pass on my thanks to Peter Wrathall and his hard-working committee for organising another wonderful night of Long Eaton Speedway nostalgia on Saturday, June 21st at the 2nd Annual Re-Union of Archers/Rangers/Outlaws/Invaders riders.
Once again, fans had the chance to mix and converse with some great names from the Station Road past, all of whom - just as they were last year - proved to be grand lads with some great stories. It was a privilege to be there.
Again, the support of the evening was not confined just to those with Long Eaton associations with ex-riders Russ Dent, Allan Butterfield, Norman Hunter, John Hart and Graham Tattersall together with Ian Martin (and friends - raffle winners extrordinaire!) from the Sunderland Speedway website all enthusiastically involved.
Long Eaton riders present (please forgive any omissions - and update the thread as necessary) in no particular order included, Peter Wrathall, Paul Evitts, Chris Pidcock, Ray Wilson, Roger Mills, Dave Harvey, Geoff Bouchard, Steve Waplington, Joe Hughes, Vic White and Keith White.
Without doubt, the acquisition of 1980's "Announcer" Ken Walker to act as Master of Ceremonies was a master stroke. His enthusiasm for the role, together with a great working knowledge of speedway and all the riders concerned meant that everyone heard a wonderfully informative "Question and Answer" session with Paul Evitts, John Hart, Vic White and Russ Dent.
Clearly the displays of Long Eaton memorabilia which decorated the function room had taken some considerable efforts from those "behind the scenes" but everyone can be satisfied with another super evening.
If you're a Long Eaton fan and you've not been to these events (or even the other evenings which have been organised over the Winter by the Group) then you have really missed out.
May I suggest that you keep an eye out for future dates; you won't be disappointed.
I'm not ashamed to say that the "buzz" or "adrenalin rush" that I experienced from talking about past times to these icons of Long Eaton's speedway history (and my youth!) meant I hardly slept on Saturday night!
Wonderful times. Wonderful night.
Well done to all concerned.
Ian Gill

After readng about the low numbers attending the SAVE OUR STADIUM meetings,I think this is understandable, because there is no Stadium to Save. Its been 12 long years since Speedway bikes have been heard at Station Road and even the most Ardent Fan must know Speedway, will not be returning to the Station Road Site. Our only hope is for track to be purpose built on land around the Long Eaton area, ie on the Old Stanton Iron Works Site or some place simular. I think it would be better if the S.O.S Campaign joined the Re Union group and work together regarding the PAST & FUTURE of Long Eaton Speedway.

The group organising Reunions etc is doing a good job and getting deserved support. The campaign group still meets 1st Tuesday monthly at Brennan's, Regent Street, L E at 8.00pm with naturally lowish numbers in the circumstances. Nevertheless we try to look forward even if there is nothing in the pipeline at present. We shall say if there is but won't start rumours for rumours sake.

I've enjoyed this site and I was wondering if it would be possible to enlarge it? By having a page or pages where fans could reminisce about certain matches, events or riders, and express their hopes and opinions about Long Eaton Speedway.I'm sure many Long Eaton Fans would enjoy this, and who knows, maybe the odd Long Eaton rider may stop by and leave their views or memories? Hope so.

I covered Long Eaton Speedway for Radio Trent in 1979 and 1980 after beng a fan for many years. It was always a friendly stadium and I had many happy times there.
I wish all fans the best, although the chances of a new stadium look bleak.

Just come across your site. Wish you all the best. I followed Long Eaton when Leicester closed in the early 60's, and followed them until I moved to the Potteries in 1975. Never knew who to support when they met!! Anyway, in those days there was always talk about the Council finding the team a new site out of town in one of the many gravel/sand pits. Is that still an option for a new home?

So sorry to hear that Dave Edwards passed away earlier this week. His announcing was second to none and if Long Eaton Speedway does come back he would have been top of the list to be the announcer again. Thanks for the memories R.I.P.

I ride with 'Blast From The Past', a group of ex-profesionals and enthusiasts who demonstrate how speedway was in the 1950's and 60's - see our website at www.vintagespeedway.co.uk. Apart from riding my JAP I also make replica race jackets for a hobby and have been asked to create a Long Eaton Archers jacket for one of our group. Can anyone confirm the colours (i.e. red archer on yellow background as shown on your website, the correct colour for the back and number) for the jacket? Also, from the period photos it looks as if the Archer is printed or painted on. Again, can anyone confirm this for me?
My email address is pete.rout@btinternet.com.
Many thanks.

Older Long Eaton fans will wish to know that former Archers rider Jack Winstanley died earlier this year at the age of 81.
Jack's career spanned more than 20 seasons and in addition to the time he spent at Station Road he appeared for Wigan and Fleetwood in his native Lancashire, for Coventry, Leicester, Sheffield, Newcastle and, finally, for Nelson in 1968.
A farmer, he rode extensively in Europe during the 1950s.

POOLE'S Aussie Davey Watt has stepped into this Sunday's Steve Johnston Testimonial (1pm) following the enforced withdrawal of Billy Janniro.
Johno said: I'm very grateful to Davey, fair play to him for coming in at this stage so that we have a top class replacement.
"As I said to Dave, I would have liked him in originally but I was trying to have as many current Coventry riders, or riders I won the league last year with, in the meeting.
"But I've been very lucky that Davey has agreed. He's a team mate of mine in Sweden and we have travelled a lot together over there. I've known him since before he came over, when he was a mechanic for one of the top riders in the Tapp series."
Janniro's withdrawal follows a crash riding for Coventry at Belle Vue on Monday. He has had stitches in a wound and may be doubtful for his World Championship event on Saturday - though he will definitely be attending the Testimonial.
FULL FIELD: LEIGH ADAMS, SCOTT NICHOLLS, JASON CRUMP, LINUS SUNDSTROM, TAI WOFFINDEN, JOE SCREEN, FREDDIE LINDGREN, DAVID HOWE, MIKAEL MAX, RORY SCHLEIN, JASON LYONS, DAVEY WATT, STEVE JOHNSTON, CARL STONEHEWER, CAMERON WOODWARD, SIMON STEAD.
MAESTRO MATCH RACES – SAM ERMOLENKO v RONNIE CORREY. DEMONSTRATION RIDE BY PETER COLLINS.

Attended public meeting on 9 June at Stanton with Glyn Price and Ian Teale. Our suggestion of a stadium went down like a lead balloon as usuaul and it wasn't mentioned at subsequent meeting on 13 June when Ian Turnbull and I were there. We could raise a strong case but frankly the time scale (min 5 years we reckon) rules it out. Tony Mole had applied but no go.
Will discuss at next meeting.

From Graham Hall, now of Skellingthorpe Lincolnshire.
Great to see the site, and the old pictures, pity there aren't more pictures of the sixties period at Station Road, my favourite time. I supported Long Eaton from 1964 to 1990, and the memory that will probably stay with me forever is the night Scunthorpe were well and truly beaten - so many tears of happiness. Good luck in the search for a new site for the track, but to me and no doubt many others, Long Eaton Speedway will always be Station Road.
